University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics Seminar Series: Modern Advances in Control and Stochastic Estimation of Compressible Aerodynamics

February 15, 2022 at 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm CST

Abstract: Two of the most important scientific questions in hypersonics and counter-hypersonics are control and stochastic estimation as applied at the flow physics level and vehicle level. These two questions are fundamental to control and estimation of external aerodynamics for maneuverable re-entry vehicles and cruise missiles. Active diagnostics and control of scramjet combustion and inlet aerodynamics to avoid unstart conditions is an example of the need for similar research in internal aerodynamics. The speaker has been an active contributor to this subject for well over three decades under the sponsorship of various DoD agencies. In this talk we will present an overview of this exciting and very timely subject in an accessible manner. We will discuss the model hierarchies of hypersonic flow and describe control theory of compressible Navier-Stokes equations and higher order moment closure models such as Burnett and super-Burnett equations with radiation coupling. We will also discuss remarkably interesting advances in nonlinear filtering well beyond Kalman filter for a range of vehicle dynamics and aerodynamic models.
