Abstract

Research at the University of Queensland over the past 40 years has been extensive, particularly in scramjet technology above M7. But the short duration test times raised particular concerns about the validity of the results. These measurements were validated in the University of Queensland lead HyShot flight program. This led to the rapidly maturing scramjet technology we see today. The University of Queensland now seeks alternative electric propulsion systems to outclass these engines. This talk will concentrate on the management approach to complete flight testing as well as the new directions the University of Queensland is taking to develop the next generation of propulsion. It will also provide a brief introduction to the Australian Program Office for Advanced Hypersonics, which is an Australian effort to provide the Australian Defence Force with coordinated access to the many interesting concepts in academia which supports the systems in a hypersonic vehicle as well as provide advice on new approaches that just may unsettle them.

RSVP by 5 pm on August 23, 2021.

Allan Paull

Allan Paull has worked for 34 years in hypersonics, primarily in the field of supersonic combustion and flight testing. While at the University of Queensland, he developed and led the HyShot flight program to establish the correlation between flight and shock tunnel measurements of supersonic combustion. Paull has been the lead for 14 hypersonic flight tests and now serves as the Defence Science and Technology Group Chair in Future Hypersonic Technologies, where he concentrates on advanced concepts. Paull is also the technical lead for the Australian Program Office for Advanced Hypersonics and technical advisor to the University of Queensland STAje-flight program.
