University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics Seminar Series: High Temperature Materials Focus at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

January 31, 2023 at 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm CST

Abstract:

The materials teams at LLNL have a unique focus on high temperature materials synthesis and analysis. The high-performance materials (HPM) group is focused on next generation material design for architected systems, along with high temperature composites for applications such as apertures, vehicle materials, leading edge fabrication, and component interfaces. During this talk we will discuss various capabilities and project overviews for ongoing work in the HPM group, including part fabrication with varying advanced manufacturing capabilities, design for manufacturing, and modeling and simulation efforts.

This work was performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under Contract DE-AC52-07NA27344.

Dr. Gabriella King

King

Dr. Gabriella King Bio:

Bella (Gabriella) is currently working to create materials and composites for operation at high temperatures and is the principal investigator for a project to fabricate and test these materials under extreme environments. She has a background in crystallography, inorganic synthesis, and material characterization, now working primarily on ceramic synthesis and material property characterization. Her materials research focuses on expanding the application of non-oxide ceramics fabricated via advanced manufacturing methods, including Direct Ink Write (DIW), spray drying, gel-casting, spark plasma sintering, and near-net shaped hot pressing.

Dr. James Cahill

Cahill

Dr. James Cahill Bio:

James is a staff scientist within the High Performance Materials group in the Materials Science Division, originally joining LLNL as a postdoctoral researcher in 2017. His research focuses on materials for extreme environments, including the synthesis and advanced manufacturing of technical ceramics and composite systems for high-temperature applications. He has a strong background with ceramic materials, specifically non-oxides such as borides, carbides and nitrides for use in thermal protection systems and high-temperature coatings.
